Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) & Paramedic Training Courses

The role of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has evolved exponentially. Advances in medicine and technology increase the role of our local area EMS providers. Recognizing the vital role EMS plays in lives of our most vulnerable patients, Summa Health System strives to achieve optimum patient care through the advancement of emergency medical protocols, technological upgrades and training.

Initial requirements to participate in Summa Health System’s Paramedic/EMS Program:

  • Minimum age - 18 Years of Age 
  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Current State of Ohio EMT Card or an Advanced card 
  • Current American Heart Provider Course CPR Card
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Proof of completion of a full A&P Course if applicable
  • Completed Application

The Summa Health Paramedic Education Program is a ten-month program beginning each January through October. (A&P Course will be offered in December).

Class Times:
The classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. If you have not taken a full A&P course within the last 3 years (with a grade of C or better), an A&P course will be provided for the first six classes on Monday and Wednesdays in December. This will allow us to meet the new National curriculum requirements which mandates A&P as a pre-requisite to the Paramedic course.

Program Description:
Students spend 12 hours each week in lecture and skill session and 12 hours per week in the clinical area. Total didactic, clinical and field internship hours will be approximately 900 hours. The schedule includes some full or partial Saturdays classes throughout the school year. 

Pre-Entrance Exam:
We require an on-line Pre-Test with passing scores for acceptance in the EMT-Class. The On-line Pre-entrance exam information will be mailed after your completed application has been received.
