Summa Health Laboratories hold certificates of accreditation under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA 88), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Medical laboratory testing is useful in evaluating a patient’s health status, diagnosing medical conditions and monitoring disease. The most common laboratory tests are performed on blood or urine samples. Laboratory testing is helpful in detecting health issues early, where physicians can respond quickly and treatment can be most effective.

Your physician may order laboratory testing as part of your wellness visit, to attain or confirm a diagnosis, or to pinpoint your best treatment options. Please bring your physician’s orders with you the day of your lab service.

A list of the most common tests that may be ordered by your physician:

• Amylase. For symptoms of a pancreatic disorder, such as severe abdominal pain, fever, loss of appetite or nausea.
• ANA. Helps with the diagnosis of lupus as well as other autoimmune diseases.
• aPTT (PTT). Evaluates the risk of excessive bleeding prior to a surgical procedure, or to monitor heparin anticoagulant therapy.
• AIC (Hemoglobin A1C or Glycohemoglobin). Used to monitor diabetes and to assist in developing a treatment plan.
• BMP (Basic Metabolic Panel). A group of 7-8 tests used as a screening tool to check for conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease.
• CBC (Complete Blood Count). Used to determine general health and nutritional status, as well as screening for toxic substance exposure and for disorders such as anemia or infections.
• CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel). A group of 14 tests that provides information about a patient’s kidneys, liver and electrolyte and acid/base balance, as well as blood sugar and blood proteins.
• ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate). Helps determine the cause of inflammation, or diagnose cause of joint or muscle pain.
• Glucose. Identifies the patient’s blood glucose level, and to screen for, diagnose and monitor diabetes, pre-diabetes and hypoglycemia.
• hCG. Typically performed to confirm and monitor pregnancy.
• HIV Antibody. Determines if the patient is infected with HIV.
• Lipid Profile. A group of tests which can determine the risk of coronary heart disease as well as the likelihood of heart attack or stroke.
• Liver Panel/Liver Function Panel/liver (hepatic) function tests (LFT). Helps detect liver damage or disease, hepatitis, or other liver-related conditions.
• Microalbumin. Performed to screen for a possible kidney disorder.
• PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen). Screens and monitors prostate cancer.
• PT (Protime). Checks the performance levels of prescribed blood-thinning medications (anti-coagulants), or to help detect and diagnose a bleeding disorder.
• TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). Screens for and diagnoses thyroid disorders, or to monitor treatment of hypothyroidism.
• T4 (Thyroxine). Typically performed following an abnormal TSH result: Diagnoses hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism in adults; screens for hypothyroidism in newborns.
• Uric Acid. Detects high levels of uric acid, or to monitor certain chemotherapy or radiation cancer therapies.
• Urinalysis. A standard test performed at pre-admission to a hospital or as part of an annual physical. It may also be done if you have symptoms relating to abdominal pain or blood in the urine.
• Urine Culture. Diagnoses a urinary tract infection (UTI).
