Summa Health Protective Services / Police Department

Summa Health Protective Services/Police Department works 24 hours-a-day, 365 days a year, providing Summa Health System Akron City, St. Thomas, and Barberton Hospital Campuses as well as the Green and Wadsworth Emergency Departments with law-enforcement services that provide for a safe and secure environment. The department is comprised of both state certified Security Officers and Police Officers. Summa Health Police Officers are fully commissioned by the State of Ohio and have law-enforcement authority identical to their municipal police counterparts. All of our officers bring a vast and ranging knowledge, as well as, experience to their job which allows them to effectively respond to the needs of the campus community. Further, many officers possess advanced training in Patrol Techniques, Community Policing, Firearms, Instructional Skills, Leadership and Development, Investigative Techniques (including a Master Criminal Investigator), Use of Force Standards and Application, Crime Scene Preservation, and Evidence Collection to name a few. All Patrol Officers have and continually receive advance training on First Aid and CPR (to include administering NARCAN), De-Escalation Skills, and Firearms to maintain proficiency with these perishable skills. 

If you are in need of assistance please call our Centralized Communications Center 330.375.3277 and our certified emergency dispatcher will assign an officer to respond to you. Additionally, in an emergency you can also locate one of the numerous emergency call stations conveniently located around our campuses in the parking lots, parking decks, and hallways. These emergency call stations will allow you to speak directly to our dispatch center and have the necessary assistance sent to your location immediately. In addition to providing a safe and secure campus environment our officers also perform many courtesy services, such as, Battery Boosts, Vehicle Lockouts, Tire Assistance, Safety Escorts to Vehicles and/or Buildings, as well as, much more. Protective Services/Police is also responsible for conducting monthly fire drills (Code Red Drill) to test both the fire system and staff knowledge on fire response. In the event of a fire drill or alarm activation please follow the direction of Hospital Staff or Officers.
