Tips to Stay Safe with Medications

  • Keep an up-to-date list of medications with you at all times so it is readily available when you see your care provider and also in case of an emergency.
  • Ask your healthcare provider before taking over-the-counter (OTC) medications or herbal supplements to ensure these medications are safe for you.
  • Ask your physician or pharmacist why you are taking the medication and how best to take it as some are better utilized when taken with food and others are more effective when taken on an empty stomach.
  • Use some kind of organizing system to ensure you take your medications when they are supposed to be taken.
  • Report any suspected side effects to your healthcare provider immediately.
  • As your physician or pharmacist to review all of your medications with you at least once a year.
  • Keep all medications out of the reach of children and other persons in the home who may try to take the medication. It is prescribed for you and you only.
  • Do not keep unused, discontinued and outdated medication. Do not flush them down the toilet or throw them in the trash. Ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them.
