Spinal Trauma

The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Spinal trauma describes damage to any part of the spinal cord, as a result of a sudden blow or cut to the spine. A spinal cord injury often causes permanent loss of strength, sensation and function below the site of the injury.

While there are many causes of spinal trauma, the more common injuries happen when the area of the spine or neck is bent or compressed. This can happen as a result of a:

  • Birth injury
  • Fall
  • Motor vehicle accident
  • Sports or recreation injury
  • Violence
  • Disease

Symptoms of Spinal Trauma

Spinal cord injuries of any kind may result in one or more of the following:

  • A pain or stinging sensation caused by damage to nerve fibers
  • Exaggerated reflexes or spasms
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions
  • Problems with heart rate and blood pressure
  • Digestive problems

  • Being older than 65
