Robotic Surgery

Summa Health System is an innovator in the area of advanced minimally invasive surgery. Using the daVinci® robotic system, our team offers a wide variety of minimally invasive robotic procedures for patients requiring, gynecological, urological, general surgical and bariatric treatment. Our highly experienced surgeons lead the market with surgeon training, including fellowships in robotic and advanced minimally invasive surgery.

What Is Robotic Surgery?

It is a robotically-assisted surgical system that provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the surgical field – along with intense magnification and high definition images of the surgical area - by using only a small incision in the body. The robotic instruments have flexible ends with a greater range of motion than that allowed by the human wrist. This technology improves the surgeon’s vision and control, with the overall result being a greater range of motion and more precise control of the instruments by the surgeon. This equipment, coupled with the skill of the surgeon using it, allows even some of the most delicate surgeries to be performed using this new technology.

With this new technology patients can expect:

  • Fewer complications
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Less risk of infection
  • Higher patient satisfaction
  • Quicker return of the patient to normal activities
  • Minimal scarring (i.e., a virtually 'scar-free' procedure)

Robotic Procedures Available:

Summa also specializes in a variety of other minimally invasive robotic surgeries. These surgeries allow physicians to perform many types of procedures through tiny incisions less than an inch long. These procedures include the following categories:

Cardiovascular Surgery

General Surgery

  • Anti-Reflux Surgery
  • Benign and malignant surgery on the colon and rectum
  • Gallbladder
  • Hernia Repair
  • Splenectomy

Gynecology

Urology

  • Adrenal surgery – removal of the adrenal gland
  • Bladder Cancer Surgery – Cystectomy
  • Dismembered Pyeloplasty
  • Kidney surgery – partial or complete removal of the kidney
  • Nephrectomy/Partial Nephrectomy
  • Prolapse surgery – correction of loss of support for vagina/bladder
  • Prostatectomy/Prostate surgery – complete or partial removal of the prostate for cancer
  • Pyeloplasty
  • Urinary Obstruction Surgery – Correct blockage between kidney and ureter

Weight Management

  • Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • SADI-S
  • Laparoscopic Revisional Surgery

Minimally invasive robotic surgery may not be the best option for everyone. Your physician can explain all of the options available to treat your condition, including whether you’re a good candidate for minimally invasive robotic surgery.
