Orthopedic Rehab & Therapy

Your recovery is important to us. Our orthopedic specialists and care team coordinate your care with Summa’s physical therapists, occupational therapists and athletic trainers to develop a recovery plan to help you reach your goals.

Rehabilitation

Our orthopedic specialists may prescribe prehab, which may include rehabilitation, strengthening, education, and training to use crutches and walkers before your surgery. This may be done with physical therapists or athletic trainers.

Total Joint Replacement Pre-Surgery Education | Joint Effort Academy

An important part of recovery is knowing what to expect before a procedure. The state-of-the-art Summa Health Joint Replacement Center of Excellence, located on the Summa Health System – Barberton Campus, offers an engaging and comprehensive preoperative program designed specifically to improve patient understanding and outcomes of knee replacement and hip replacement surgery. Through informative pre-surgery classes, the academy covers:

  • Preparing for surgery
  • Optimizing for surgery
  • Discuss pain management plan
  • Powering up for surgery with nutrition
  • Meds to beds program
  • What to expect the day of total joint replacement surgery
  • What to expect each day you spend in the hospital
  • Physical and occupational therapy goals
  • Planning for discharge
  • Discuss common discomfort
  • Equipment you may need after total joint replacement surgery
  • In-home instruction on medical equipment you will need following surgery
  • Other therapies and appointments you may need

Outpatient Rehabilitation

We have ten locations located throughout the region to make outpatient rehabilitation convenient for you.  Therapy services include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Specialty treatment techniques include: McKenzie Method for the spine, Kinesio-taping, Graston Technique for instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization, neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), aging in place and hand therapy.

Outpatient rehabilitation may be prescribed by our orthopedic specialists to help you recover from an injury or surgery to regain movement.

Summa Rehab Hospital

For patients requiring more intensive inpatient rehabilitation, Summa Rehab Hospital located on the Summa Health System – Akron Campus, provides expert care. This hospital helps patients recover and regain their independence. Summa Rehab Hospital offers 60 private patient rooms, a 5,000-square-foot rehabilitation gymnasium, an outdoor therapy area and an apartment suite to help patients transition back into a home setting with a kitchen, laundry and shower.
