Nursing Research
Nursing Research started with Florence Nightingale, the founder of our nursing profession. Her actions reduced the mortality rates of soldiers in the Crimean War from 40% to 2%. Her study of hygiene and promotion of health, the physical environment, improving sanitation and disease prevention, of keeping detailed records, compiling statistics and use of the scientific research method set the foundation for nursing research.
Nightingale’s discoveries and teachings live on - Nursing Research at Summa Health continues with Nightingale’s Legacy. Her scholarly inquiry is revealed in our nurses today.
On May 3, 2016, Summa Health System – Akron and St. Thomas Campuses were redesignated with Magnet® recognition for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and received three exemplars including one for dissemination at Summa's Nursing Research to external audiences.
Nurses, from bedside to administration, are involved at all levels of research; principal investigators, co-investigators, or as members of the research team such as data collectors. Nurses from all areas are conducting scholarly activities; Ambulatory Services- Cardiovascular, Oncology and Senior Services, Behavioral Health, Critical Care, Emergency Services, Medical/Surgical, Surgical Services, Telemetry, and Women’s Health. These accomplishments occur with the support of the Director of Professional Practice and Magnet Program and the Nursing Research Council as well as additional resources in the nurses’ research endeavors.
