New Tower Press Room

For members of the press: Below are a few story ideas that may be of interest to you. Individual interviews, photos and video shoots are available for all these stories and others. Please contact Shannon Kew at Summa Health to arrange your story.

Community Open House is May 19

Summa Health will host an open house for the community from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, May 19. All are invited to join in the festivities, which will include tours of the new tower, a ribbon-cutting, refreshments, music, raffle prizes and fun for the entire family.

Tower’s Economic Impact on Region is Huge

Summa Health is investing more than $70 million in direct labor costs on the new patient tower project. And that number is more than $100 million when you total in all of Summa’s projects scheduled over the next two to three years. At our peak construction period, Summa was spending about $8 to $10 million per month on the tower project. In addition, we’re employing about 275 skilled tradesmen on the job and have had more than 300 tradesmen at other points in the construction period, a great example of supporting our local economy.

Way Finder Will Help Navigate the New Tower

Summa Health is the first hospital system in Northeast Ohio to provide a mobile indoor navigation system to patients and visitors of its downtown Akron campus. In partnership with LogicJunction, the hospital has implemented an app that provides GPS-like guidance indoors, offering turn-by-turn walking directions across its 1.2 million square foot campus, including the new patient tower, which opens May 28, 2019.

The Healing Power of Art

Summa Health promotes a healthcare environment that surrounds and connects patients, visitors and staff with the healing powers of the arts. The new patient tower will feature nearly 50 unique pieces of art that will enhance our patients’ and visitors’ experience.

Among the notable works will be a 20-foot-tall sculpture outside the tower’s main entrance — the new front door of the Akron Campus — and a signature commissioned piece highlighting the two-story main lobby. All works in the tower are created by artists with ties to Northeast Ohio.
