Master Facility Plan is an Investment in Our Community

It’s the beginning of a new era of healthcare at Summa Health.

We’re excited to share the details of our master facility plan, we’re also sharing Summa’s vision for the future of healthcare in our region. It’s a vision that’s grounded in the principles of population health management, focused on delivering better care and improving the overall health of the communities we serve.

The plan represents an investment of up to $350 million in facility improvements across the system that will establish Summa as the leading healthcare provider in the greater Akron region.

In Phase I of the plan we’ll invest $270 million over the next five years to begin extensive renovations at Summa Health System – Akron and Barberton Campuses, including:

  • A landmark 300,000 square-foot patient tower will greet visitors and serve both as a beautiful addition to the city’s skyline and a reminder of the continued rebirth and revitalization of the city. Set to open in spring of 2019, the tower will include new facilities for Summa’s Women’s Health program, modern inpatient rooms and nursing units, and expanded surgical capacity. View the Akron Campus West Tower Renderings (PDF).
  • Increasing the number of private patient rooms to approximately 80 percent of beds at Summa Health System – Akron Campus.
  • Adding a 50,000 square-foot medical office building on the Summa Health System – Akron Campus that will integrate new design concepts to promote a team-based model of care.
  • Providing increased outpatient capacity across the system, with the ability to design around patient-centered care.
  • Modernizing various portions of Summa Health System – Barberton Campus and aligning services there that will improve access to better meet the overall needs of the community. These improvements include a new imaging and diagnostic center and enhancements to surgical services.

As the largest private employer in Summit County, Summa Health is invested in the growth and success of the greater Akron region and improving the overall health of our community. These investments will serve as the cornerstone of our vision.

The facility plan is a critical step in our transformation to a “new Summa,” and is much more than just an investment in bricks and mortar. It’s an investment in the economy of the greater Akron region. It’s an investment in improving the overall health of the communities we serve through population health management. And, it’s an investment in the future of Summa Health.
