Allergy Testing

Summa Health Otolaryngology (ENT) offers allergy testing for environmental allergies through a skin prick test. The skin prick test exposes your skin to small amounts of allergens (allergy-causing substances) and can identify environmental allergy triggers, including ragweed, pollen, dust mites, pets and mold.

Allergy Signs and Symptoms

People with allergies can experience a range of symptoms. Some common signs and symptoms of allergies include:

• Runny or stuffy nose
• Red and watery eyes
• Sneezing
• Itchy nose, eyes, ears or mouth

If you’re struggling with allergy signs and symptoms, Summa Health’s ENT team can help. Your initial visit will be with a provider to discuss the symptoms you’re experiencing and complete an intake form. Allergy testing can be done on the same day of the initial visit as long as you have not taken an antihistamine for the last seven days. 

Allergy Treatment

Your treatment plan will depend on the results of the skin prick test. Treatment options include:

• Oral medications – over-the-counter or prescription
• Nasal spray
• Environment changes (e.g., adding a humidifier or air purifier, avoiding the outdoors when pollen is particularly bad, wearing a mask outside, etc.)
• Allergy shots

Your provider will explain your skin prick test results and discuss the best treatment option for you.
